John Hetzendorf enters his 23rd year as an assistant coach at Wichita State University. His coaching achievements include 101 all-conference athletes, 63 regional qualifiers, 35 conference champions, 25 school records, 15 NCAA championship qualifiers, and 8 all-americans. Coach Hetzendorf was the 2022 USTFCCCA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of The Year. In 2021-2022 Hetzendorf helped two shockers record the highest-ever NCAA finishes in the throwing events and earn first-team all-american honors. Michael Bryan was 5th in the men’s hammer throw and Taran Taylor was 4th in the men’s javelin throw where he broke the school record with a toss of 78.76 (258-05). In 2018 the shocker men’s javelin program was ranked #1 in the USTFCCCA event squat rankings for 7 weeks. During his tenure at Wichita State 4 javelin athletes have qualified to represent the shockers at the US Olympic Trials.
